T-SHIRT VS TOWEL

T-Shirts seems to be the best for drying natural hair. The t-shirt, being 100% cotton absorbs the water quicker and also with little to no friction. Covering your whole head with a towel and rubbing it vigorously causes friction and damage. The best way to to dry is to section hair off, wrap towel each section and squeeze the excess water out. You have more control over how much you want to dry by using a t-shirt. If you wanted to air dry your hair fast, you can apply more pressure when squeezing excess water out. If you want to set it (twist/braid out or roller set), you can use less pressure so that hair can stay damp a little longer as you work through your hair to complete the setting process.

~So grab you a T-Shirt and let the drying began~

TIP FOR FULLER TWIST/BRAID OUTS

Want fuller twist/braid outs but your hair type is on the thinner side? Try air drying your hair about 50% and the set. Air drying make the hair thicker blow drying or setting completely wet.

STOP DAMAGING YOUR HAIR

Did you know that brushing and/or combing your hair causes damage? By brushing and/or combing your hair frequently causes damage to your cuticle; It's chipping away at and causing friction to the cuticle which eventually causes damage to your hair. For many of us, brushing and combing our hair is a daily routine, these are the hair tools we use to style our hair. We can still you these tools but in a different way. Once you kick your old habit of how you brush and comb your hair now and become more familiar with the correct way, it will become second nature and you will be on your way to a healthy start.

- TRY  BRINGING BRUSHING AND/OR COMBING YOUR HAIR  TO A MINIMUM- THE LESS  THE BETTER

- LEAVE IT ALONE! IF YOU CAN, AVOID TOUCHING YOUR HAIR

- WHEN BRUSHING HAIR, ONLY USE SOFT BRISTLES

- DO NOT USE A BRUSH ON WET HAIR (PREFERABLY WIDE TOOTH COMBS)

- WHEN WRINGING YOUR HAIR, TRY TO GENTLY WRING WITH A TOWEL OR HANDS      (ANYTHING ELSE CAUSES FRICTION)

CO-WASHING

Hi ll,
Co-washing is a technique used when ONLY conditioner is used to cleanse and condition the hair. Conditioner is used in place of shampoo the first go round and it's used as conditioner the second go round. Natural hair is already drier than relaxed hair so we need to maintain as much moisture as possible. Lots of shampoos have an ingredient in it called SLS (which I did a post on) which contributes to drying the hair out. Some recommend 6-8 weeks between every shampoo, others may say 3-4 weeks. I say use your judgement. If you use a lot of products in your hair you may feel the need to shampoo more often. If you feel and/or see the product buildup on your hair, you need to shampoo. Also when you do shampoo, you should be using a SLS free shampoo.
The benefits of co-washing is MOISTURE and MANAGEABILITY!!!!!
So go stock up on your conditioners...One of my favorite conditioners is Pantene for Women of color (in the brown bottle). It's inexpensive and gets the job done.

THE BAGGIE METHOD

Post from Lisa Jf:

The baggie method. Anyone have any rave reviews? I just learned about this last week and have been doing the baggie method for three days now. Basically what you do is coat your ends in a leave in conditioner of your choice followed by an oil of your choice (coconut and castor oil seem to be the preferred oils). Then you take a plastic bag, shower cap, or saran wrap and wrap around your ends. I personally put my hair in two braids and coat the ends with the oil. then I take two shower caps and wrap each braid end in a cap. I secure the cap with a metal free elastic. My biggest issue is length retention. My hair grows just fine, but i have a hard time having it grow past my mid back. Apparently the baggie method is the length retention fix. I only do this at night. I tried to baggie my whole head the first night and woke up with a wet head full of sweat. Going forward I will only baggie my whole head the night before I wash and DC. During the week, i will baggie my ends each night. So far so good!
